Last week, Mendix was invited to demonstrate the Mendix platform at Sogeti Engineering World, an event organized by IT service organization, Sogeti. The theme of the day was “The next step in adulthood and productivity” – referring to the fast developments within the software engineering industry. Our head of R&D, Johan den Haan, was invited to give a presentation about our vision in regards to productivity and software engineering.

As it turned out, Johan’s presentation was one of the most popular sessions of the event. During his presentation, Johan elaborated on the use of DSL’s (Domain Specific Languages), model interpretation and ways to embed custom Java code into Mendix applications. The icing on the cake was a demo using our latest release; the long- anticipated version 2.5 of the Mendix platform.

Visitors were surprised with the ease of use and the speed with which Johan was able to build up an order entry system from scratch. His demo proved to attendees that by empowering business analysts with the right tools, the business world is in for a whole new game of Business Agility Management.

Today’s business organisations operate in an increasingly tough environment, from a competitive, financial and regulatory framework perspective. Whichever direction pressure comes from, one thing is certain: organisations cannot keep still if they want to survive, so IT applications and systems need to change and adapt to new business landscapes. Agile software development has recently been embraced by a large number of organisations. One of the key tenets of the agile approach is that code is master, and models and documentation are secondary artifacts. However, producing and maintaining code continues to be a time consuming and error-prone task.The reasons are not hard to imagine: there is a long distance to bridge between business requirements and code expressed in languages like Java and C#, with all the errors and distortions that can be produced on the way, and associated validation and testing costs. In addition, the people who best understand the requirements, i.e. business people and business analysts, are not directly involved in the development of the solution, opening the way to misinterpretation and miscommunication errors. Model Driven Delivery (MDD) brings the business analyst into a central development role. Code is no longer master, in fact it becomes almost irrelevant. MDD empowers the business analyst to create solutions to business problems using visual models that are much closer to the business requirements than low-level artifacts such as program code. Not only are the resulting solutions of higher quality as a result of the level at which they are stated, but the time and cost of developing them are dramatically shortened. MDD has been around for some years, however most existing platforms adopt the code-generation approach, in which the solution is always made up of program code, and models have to be translated into code before they can be executed. So code ends up being, if not the master, the key executable artifact, which has to be tested for correctness if not maintained independently from the models.

Software bedrijf Mendix organiseert op vrijdag 31 oktober 2008 de eerste Mendix Model Experience in het World Port Center te Rotterdam. Het evenement zal geheel in het teken staan van de nieuwste ontwikkelingen en praktijkervaringen op het gebied van Model-driven Development.Model-driven Development wordt gezien als de nieuwste trend in software ontwikkeling. Model-driven Development stelt bedrijfsanalisten, IT ontwikkelaars, IT architecten en eindgebruikers in staat om zich uit te drukken in hun eigen domein specifieke taal. Door gebruik te maken van visuele modellen in plaats van programmeercode kan de applicatie op een hoger abstractieniveau worden gemodelleerd. Deze ontwikkeling stelt bedrijfsanalisten met industriespecifieke kennis in staat om een centralere rol te spelen in de ontwikkeling van nieuwe bedrijfsapplicaties.

De dag wordt georganiseerd door Mendix en zal geheel in het teken staan van de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in de markt en bij Mendix. Het programma staat onder leiding van Mendix maar bestaat uit presentaties en lezingen van diverse (onafhankelijke) experts uit het veld. De opening en keynote lezing wordt verzorgd door Maarten Steen van het Telematica instituut en er zullen praktijkervaringen worden gedeeld door o.a. Sanoma Uitgevers en Magnus Management Consultants.
