One of the coolest and most anticipated new features in this release is an all-around upgrade to the way Mendix applications are designed. Market pressure from consumer-focused applications and heightened expectations from business end users are raising the user experience bar for enterprise applications. In this post, let’s take a look at the platform enhancements that will let you structure and design amazing looking applications, and do it faster than ever.
If you’re tired of structuring new forms with nested tables, the new Layouts feature is going to blow your mind! With Mendix 5, you’ll start every new Form (now referred to as Pages) with a customizable template Layout for you to snap various application components right into. Layouts can define areas of your application like headers, footers, left and right sidebars and content panes. As always, we know you want the flexibility to structure Pages any way you want – so you’ll also have an intuitive way to create your own custom layouts within the Mendix Business Modeler.
We’ll be the first to admit it, theming in Mendix has always been a little tricky. While you can design Mendix applications with any color, gradient, corner, edge, padding, and effect you want – the best themes are created by designers that know the Mendix flavor of Cascading Style Sheets – and that’s just not how we do things around here. We want everyone who knows standard CSS, in this case, the widely-used Bootstrap front-end framework, to be able to design beautiful applications. If you’re comfortable designing websites, you’ll be comfortable designing Mendix 5 applications. And not to worry, we’ll have some example themes ready for you in the App Store.
The new Layouts functionality coupled with the ability to use page-specific and layout-specific CSS, and you’ve got a blazing fast way to build applications that work on any device – desktop, tablet, or smartphone – and guess what: Mendix does all the work for you. When you start a new application in the Mendix Business Modeler, the first thing you’ll do is select a sample project that comes with beautiful layouts specifically designed for desktop, tablet, or smartphone devices. These Device Profiles let you configure the layout and theme that you want to show on each screen size.
