Energy Supplier NLE Adopts the Mendix App Platform to Fuel Innovation

Fast-Growing NLE leveraging high-productivity app platform to roll out customer self-service portal and support application needs across the entire organization

BOSTON March 12, 2014Mendix, the app platform for the enterprise, announced today that Dutch energy supplier De Nederlandse Energie Maatschappij (NLE) is rolling out the first in a series of innovative new business applications built on the Mendix App Platform. Consolidating all application delivery needs onto a single high-productivity app platform will help the fast-growing company more quickly and efficiently differentiate its offerings in an increasingly competitive market.

The first application built on Mendix is a self-service portal that NLE customers can use to log in and manage their accounts. NLE, Holland’s fourth-largest energy supplier with 400,000 household customers and 20,000 commercial accounts, turned to the Mendix App Platform after officials determined that traditional .NET development methods were holding the company back. Using Mendix’s visual and highly collaborative development approach that brings IT and business users together to rapidly and iteratively build applications, NLE is gearing up together with implementation partner First Consulting B.V. to deliver the portal after just six weeks of work.

“In our business, we need to innovate quickly and differentiate ourselves based on our quality of service. That was becoming harder and harder to accomplish using traditional development methods,” said Harald Swinkels, CEO and co-founder of NLE. “Using Mendix, we’re fundamentally transforming the way IT enables the business, delivering new applications in easily one-fifth of the time and cost. We’re just getting started in terms of how we can leverage the platform to drive our innovation and growth.”

NLE cited the following reasons for adopting the Mendix App Platform:

  • Speed of Delivery – Mendix and its visual, model-driven development capabilities enabled developers to build applications significantly faster than they could on .NET
  • Ease of Change – The company was able to easily make changes to applications during the development process or once in production
  • Agile Integration – Mendix seamlessly supported the agile development methodology already in place at NLE
  • Innovation – The ease of use and speed of delivery will enable the company to pursue a broader program of IT-fueled innovation

Building on the successful rollout of the customer portal, NLE plans to utilize Mendix as a single platform to support application development needs across the entire organization. All development efforts – everything outside of NLE’s core back-end systems – will be built on or connected with Mendix and will be instantly deployed in the Mendix Cloud. The company plans to phase out .NET, a BPM tool called ProcessRunner, and many home-grown apps, and is assembling an in-house development team to use Mendix to build all required apps.

“To succeed in a competitive market, companies like NLE need to continuously innovate and deliver applications that drive real change in their businesses,” said Gottfried Sehringer, vice president of marketing at Mendix. “NLE’s choice of our platform reinforces what we’re seeing across industries – that Mendix is the only solution that can empower small teams to deliver at the speed required by the business.”
