How MBH Bank Built a Unified Digital Platform and Accelerated Process Innovation with Mendix
MBH Bank was established in 2023 by way of a triple merger between Budapest Bank, MKB Bank, and Takarékbank. Today it is one of Hungary’s leading financial institutions. As a modern universal bank, its mission is to provide accessible, state-of-the-art financial services and an ever-expanding portfolio of products to meet the needs of both retail and corporate/institutional clients. With the largest branch network in Hungary, MBH Bank serves more than 2 million retail and corporate customers.
Merging three established organizations also meant rationalizing hundreds of systems and processes into a unified IT landscape. MBH Bank began working with Mendix in 2024 to accelerate the delivery of new solutions and the consolidation of existing ones.
Today, their team has developed more than 40 new applications that are digitizing processes across customer support, internal workflows, pensioner vouchers management, and loan processing.
With the Mendix platform, their team is delivering applications in a matter of weeks, not only saving the organization multiple FTEs of effort each month, but also enabling adaptation to extensive changes in volume of work or in regulatory environment, and paving the way for a new approach to innovation.
Investing in Transformation
The completion of the MBH Bank merger in 2023 marked a critical turning point. With ambitions to become a national champion, the bank’s strategy now focused on realizing additional synergies, enhancing internal efficiency, and further developing its client-focused processes.
The situation post-merger, however, was riddled with technical complexity. Across the bank, core processes lived in a mix of tools such as Nintex, SharePoint, and Microsoft Access. Additionally, many processes were still managed manually through Excel spreadsheets and email.
As the three organizations came together, the central IT team began seeking a platform that could:
- Rapidly deliver new software in the face of shifting requirements.
- Replace legacy or duplicate systems across the organization.
- Integrate seamlessly with the bank’s remaining systems of record.
- Reduce manual work and facilitate more intelligent, data-driven operations.
MBH Bank began evaluating leaders in the rapid application development space, and ultimately selected Mendix. The platform stood out for its:
- Strong workflow automation capabilities
- Proven speed to market
- User-friendly IDE
- Ease of integration
“With Mendix, we wanted to replace these former solutions [Nintex, Access, SP] and define a unified approach,” said István Sponga, Head of Operations Development at MBH Bank.
“We needed to implement a platform that could deliver fast, practical alternatives in areas where legacy systems and traditional IT development could not respond in the foreseeable future,” added Gergely Gacsal, Chief Operating Officer at MBH Bank.
Banking on Mendix
István Sponga oversees process improvement with low-code and RPA at MBH Bank. Within this function, a small team of 7 people – who were previously the end-user computing group – began learning Mendix.
The team using Mendix had varied backgrounds with traditional programming languages and SharePoint or Access. They noted that Mendix was the best of both worlds – the flexibility of a low-code IDE with the capability to address complex implementations for those with a traditional coding background.
“The whole system and how the business logic is handled is in a low-code way, but you can also use the editor to write your own code in Java for anything that isn’t pre-built already,” said Sponga.
The MBH Bank team made several strategic decisions to accelerate their time to value:
- Enlisting an expert Mendix partner to share knowledge and best practices.
- Moving from a waterfall to an agile way of working.
- Integrating with the bank’s standards for software development.
Unified Customer Callbacks
With the right foundation in place, MBH Bank has developed more than 40 applications with Mendix in just two years. One of their first solutions has been their Contact Center application.
Following the merger to create MBH Bank, each of the pre-existing banks brought their contact center teams together. However, each team still operated with its own systems and processes.
One of their core processes is managing callbacks when a customer calls with an issue or request. The process is relatively straightforward – the contact center team member would log the customer’s information and assign a callback time.
Some teams were using legacy tools and others were relying on a mix of calendar appointments and Excel trackers. This approach offered limited flexibility and transparency across the team.
Shortly after they began developing Mendix applications independently, the team created the Contact Center callback app with Mendix to replace a legacy process which was hard to maintain due to the volume of transactions.
The application provides:
- A more user-friendly and streamlined experience for contact center team members.
- Better response time for customers, as callbacks can easily be reallocated by managers based on team member availability.
- A unified view of callback data to identify trends and areas of improvement over time.
The team worked closely with a small group of business users throughout the development and testing phases. Once the application was ready, all contact center team members were trained in the span of a few weeks – then they were off and running.
“Our users really like the front-end and how it’s very modern and easy to use. Mendix provides us the flexibility that other solutions couldn’t,” said Sponga.
After a few days of use, the team observed a much higher transaction volume than before. It turned out that the users and their managers were so satisfied with the Mendix application, they migrated 7 other tools into it, so the new workflow now serves as a unified solution for the bank handling about 10,000 callbacks per month across 300 users.
Rapid Response to New Legislation
MBH Bank has also seen success leveraging Mendix as a fast, scalable way to respond to regulatory changes. In 2025 the Hungarian government implemented a program to support 2 million pension holders. On September 1, these retired Hungarians would each receive 10 vouchers worth 30,000 forints (or €75) to be spent on food through the end of the year.
Banks across Hungary were given a general process to follow:
- Pension holders would receive the scannable vouchers in the mail and could then use them to shop at most Hungarian grocery stores.
- The stores would then bring all their vouchers to their respective bank each week and redeem them for cash.
- The bank would have to check the validity of each voucher with a third party to ensure that there was no risk of fraud before issuing funds to the store. Then, they would be reimbursed directly by the Hungarian State Treasury at the end of the program.
The program was announced in late June – meaning that every bank in Hungary had to establish its own reimbursement system in 2 months. With a total of 20 million vouchers changing hands between various groups outside of the bank, MBH Bank needed a digital solution that could handle high demand and complexity.
“Within these two months the regulatory framework was evolving rapidly, requiring flexibility and fast decision-making. There was a lot of uncertainty in the whole process, which was why we decided to build it with Mendix,” said Sponga.
With some quick alignment and scoping, the team got started. In the end, the Pensioner Voucher application was delivered in 28 days from start to finish – with just 18 days spent on development, and the rest on planning and rollout.
“When the first vouchers were brought in for reimbursement in early September, we were ready. We were also able to provide a solution that was even better for our customers than our competitors could,” said Sponga.
Since every bank in Hungary had to deliver on the same mandate, MBH Bank could actually see the comparative solutions brought forward. Their largest competitors were requiring stores to pre-book appointments to redeem vouchers, while MBH Bank was able to handle significantly higher volumes with greater flexibility.
As the program was only set to run for 4 months, MBH Bank did not have to invest a tremendous amount of resources to develop an application that may only be used temporarily.
“Mendix gave us the flexibility and speed to develop a complex solution with a strict deadline. The application works well and we’re really proud of what we delivered. Without this automation, the process would have required extensive manual effort, which is now eliminated by the solution,” said Ádám Rozsnyai, Head of Process Automation at MBH Bank.
Investing in Automation
Robust workflow capabilities were a key requirement for MBH Bank to digitize these processes. When solution requests come in, Sponga’s team will validate the best approach within the process automation area. Today, most of the requests that they receive are re-platforming legacy SharePoint or Access systems.
“If something needs to be automated, we will decide whether it should be done in Mendix, or just purely RPA, or both. Mendix fits best where we need a workflow engine. When something requires automating heavily repetitive tasks, then we will use RPA,” said Sponga.
The MBH Bank process automation team has limited resources, so the approachability of Mendix Workflow has made it easier for team members to implement as compared to more traditional workflow tools.
Unified Systems Ready for the Future
Looking ahead, István’s team will continue to support anyone in the bank who needs a process automation solution. In 2026 their team is focused on:
- Building up their Mendix development experience and capabilities.
- Increasing the consistency in quality amongst their applications.
- Scaling up the bank’s Mendix ecosystem by moving business logic into separate applications – yet providing a unified system approach.
- Creating smarter, AI-enabled solutions.
“Right now we are searching for ways to launch Copilot-based solutions, and the next step is certainly how we can connect to Mendix to deliver more AI-enabled applications,” said Sponga.
In just two years MBH Bank has used Mendix to rapidly unify and modernize a range of processes. Their 40 applications touch everything from loan origination to tax administration.
What was previously a complex web of competing systems is becoming a network of compatible and modern solutions – all primed to support the bank in its next phase of growth.
