2023 Gartner ® Magic Quadrant™ for Enterprise Low-Code Application Development Names Mendix a Leader Positioned for Highest Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision

Gartner Names Mendix a Leader for the seventh consecutive year*
Gartner evaluations focus on transformational technologies and future needs of end users

BOSTON (USA) – October 23, 2023 – Mendix, a Siemens business, announced it has once again been named a Leader in the newly released 2023 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Low-code Application Platforms (LCAP). Mendix was positioned highest for Ability to Execute and furthest for Completeness of Vision. The 2023 report marks the seventh consecutive year that Mendix has been named a Leader by Gartner.

For Mendix, this year’s Gartner recognitions are very significant, given the rapid pace of technological change. This compounds the enterprise’s need to mobilize the entire organization to deliver market-ready innovations in all areas and forms of the business, regardless of complexity. Mendix believes that the Gartner Magic Quadrant market evaluation of the Enterprise Low-Code Application Platforms is at the epicenter of addressing those challenges. By definition, Gartner states¹ “By applying a graphical treatment and a uniform set of evaluation criteria, a Magic Quadrant helps you quickly ascertain how well technology providers are executing their stated visions and how well they are performing against Gartner’s market view.” And, despite rampant global inflation and shrinking IT budgets, enterprise demand for low-code application development platforms continues to rise sharply. It also remains the fastest-growing sector of the maturing low-code market and is estimated to reach $10 billion by year-end, according to Gartner.

Further illustrating the pressure on organizations to create digital-first solutions, Gartner predicts that “70 percent of new applications developed by enterprises will use low-code/no-code technology” by 2025.”

Redefining Agility and Delivering Transformational Impact

Mendix believes its position in the Leaders Quadrant as highest on Ability of Execute axis and the Completeness of Vision axis is supported by the platform’s inherent ability to handle the complexity of delivering transformational business impact for today’s enterprises. Thousands of forward-thinking enterprises have adopted the Mendix Platform for a wide range of use cases, which require best-of-breed user experiences, architecting for scale, cloud deployment flexibility, and integrating with the full enterprise IT landscape rather than being limited to a single vendor’s portfolio.

“Our customers know they need to change fast — but also know it requires a lot of work to do so quickly and successfully,” said Tim Srock, CEO of Mendix. “The power of the Mendix Platform is in the levels of abstraction and automation that is uniquely baked in, which simplifies and thereby accelerates every aspect of the application development process.”

“Within our program, the focus is to build new solutions as fast as possible and to improve continuously in short periods of time,” said Volkswagen Autoeuropa’s digitalization project leader Martin Mikoleizig at a recent event after winning an award for Lean Production with their digital twin shop floor application. “Mendix encourages this by providing an easy-to-use, safe, and high-performing platform where the business can create and explore their own solutions hands-on without losing much time in the specification phase.”

Srock added, “The Mendix Platform excels at providing an architecturally superior platform with the core capabilities required for a paradigm shift in how enterprises can turn ideas into outcomes through software development regardless of problem complexity.”

Transformational Impact Takes a Village

As part of its ongoing mission to support impactful business transformation with digital-first solutions, Mendix continues to build a robust ecosystem with blue-chip partnerships. This includes strategic alliances with AWS and SAP; global system providers such as Accenture, Capgemini, and Deloitte; and independent channel partners in the Mendix ISV program. The combined strengths of the Mendix ecosystem empower its partners with agility and responsiveness, delivering transformational value for global customers.

On its close partnership with Mendix, Hanna Hennig, CIO of Siemens AG, said, “Mendix on AWS is a key driver of our digital transformation. It’s unleashing the creative talent of business and IT experts all over Siemens – across all business lines and functions – with over 500 apps in production and hundreds more on the way it’s the best of both worlds – the speed and innovation of Mendix with the security, scalability, reliability, and availability of AWS.”

At the recent Mendix UK Manufacturing Forum, David Yazdani, head of engineering methods at Rolls Royce, said, “From a view of 60,000 feet, it’s easy to understand [an enterprise’s software] landscape. We put a PLM system in MES, feed it to SAP, and execute the order. But when you look closer, say from 200 feet, it’s a horribly complicated situation, full of all sorts of software and bespoke code. We can’t create software fast enough. We had to break this paradigm, and the route we found is low-code.”

For a long time, digital transformation seemed too big, too daunting for a lot of enterprises. The Mendix combination of platform, processes, and partnership helps support enterprises through their most complex and critical needs.

Innovating Beyond the Boundaries of Low-Code

Since its inception nearly two decades ago, Mendix has pioneered low-code possibilities, establishing its credibility and strength in the enterprise tech stack. Mendix continues to advance, executing on its vision of world-class innovation for business transformation with the combined powers of its best-in-class platform, partner ecosystem, technology integrations, and committed community of developers.

As hundreds of new cloud-based platforms are drawn to the maturing LCAP market, the need for enterprises to separate the signal from the noise becomes vital. By 2027, Gartner predicts that cloud deployments “will be ubiquitous and the underlying basis for most IT and business innovation.”2 But they also warn that “by 2025, 70 percent of digital investments will fail to deliver the expected business outcomes due to the absence of a strategic portfolio management approach.”³

Digitalization at scale should simplify the tech stack. And providing the business with the right information and guardrails helps ensure the right mix of projects to maximize ROI. In short, Mendix is designed for today’s most complex enterprise-level challenges.

Evaluation of Magic Quadrant Capabilities

For this year’s research report, Gartner evaluated low-code vendors on various use cases, summarized and subsequently published in the 2023 Critical Capabilities for Enterprise Low-Code Application Platforms report. Key use cases examined line-of-business software developments for back- and front-office applications, modernization and augmentation of legacy business applications, and development of applications to support internal company processes and workspace automation.
