Mendix Extends Lead with 2nd Generation AI Engine for its Market-Leading Low-Code Application Development Platform

Groundbreaking features shorten ramp time for new developers, increase developer productivity, and improve software quality for enterprises building a smarter future

MENDIX WORLD, ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS – APRIL 16, 2019Mendix, a Siemens business and the global leader in no-code/low-code application development for the enterprise, today announced as part of its Spring ’19 Release, the 2nd generation of its AI engine known as Mendix Assist. Mendix Assist is a core component of Mendix’s market and technology-leading platform for low-code application development. Mendix Assist is available in both Mendix Studio and Mendix Studio Pro, also announced today. Mendix Assist mobilizes the power of artificial intelligence to teach, advise, and assist software developers of varying skill sets. The enhanced version’s next-step accuracy has been increased to 95%, an industry-leading position.

Mendix is the only low-code platform to seamlessly integrate real-time, in-product, AI-assisted contextual next-step suggestions. With the Spring ’19 Release, Mendix continues its market leadership in AI-assisted development by further increasing next-step accuracy, reducing defects in software, and accelerating the time to value of software development.

“We are at a technological inflection point where AI has the power to augment and extend individual ability,” said Johan den Haan, CTO at Mendix. “Low-code has begun the work of improving app development’s time to market by a factor of ten. Scaling to the next level will require enterprises to have significantly more people expertly using this platform. AI-enabled development will empower more developers of varying skill sets to deliver software faster.”

Ten Years of Collective Knowledge

Mendix Assist’s AI recommendations are based on ten years of software development experience by the Mendix development community, in a data set comprising five million anonymous application logic flows gathered across 15 industries. Mendix’s AI algorithm learns with continued use, with the result that its recommendations have achieved 95% proven accuracy.

Autonomous Pair Programming

For professional developers working in Studio and Studio Pro, Mendix Assist provides a second set of virtual eyes in a “pair programming” role. This once-common best practice is rarely seen in lean organizations affected by the market’s current IT talent gap.

Mendix Assist’s AI-enabled pair programming helps experienced coders by providing high-accuracy suggestions for the next modeling activity, reducing coding mistakes to facilitate expert quality software. The productivity gains and enhanced speed enabled by AI suggestions frees developers to work on the creative, impactful side of application development to solve critical business needs.

Gartner analysts predict that, “by 2022, at least 40 percent of all new AD (application development) projects will use virtual AI co-developers on the team.”* This practice will enable enterprises to keep pace with the demands of digital transformation initiatives.

A World-Class Coach

Mendix Assist also mentors citizen developers and business experts as they create apps within the Mendix Studio IDE, designed for less technical users. For these users, merging AI with low-code development is like having a world-class coach advising you on next steps, catching and preventing technical errors, and providing feedback accelerating proficiency and comfort with application development.

“We’re finding that AI-enabled development is driving innovation throughout the enterprise,” said den Haan. “Ideas can come from all corners of the organization. AI-assisted development enables a broader group of people to develop applications. The AI assistant nudges them in the right direction, making them more productive as well. Increasingly, visual models and AI-assisted development are becoming key ingredients for successful, software-driven companies.”

Mendix Spring ’19 Release

Mendix Spring ’19 Release is a major update to the company’s pioneering low-code platform, ramping up the platform’s power and capabilities, enabling enterprises to catalyze their digital innovation agendas and advance their initiatives to bring the digital and physical worlds together. With this release, Mendix is launching a new and powerful “maker movement” to drive the digital future — dramatically expanding the universe of application “makers,” furthering the platform’s leadership in supporting enterprise-scale applications, and leveraging smart technology, in both the creation of applications and their capabilities.
